For a moment, I’d like to return to the reasons for my presence in Mariupol for the third time in less than a year.
I created this website www.arguments.photo during the first of my “Pics for Peace” photo workshops in Ukraine, which began with the start of this war, which began, it’s worth remembering, in 2014.
If there’s one country whose chaotic destiny over the last few decades (even before the Chernobyl disaster, in my opinion) has not left me indifferent, it’s Ukraine.
The scale of this conflict fuelled by all sides, prompted me to react again.
Because I think I’m one of the few photographers to have travelled to this country since 1994 (some twenty times), speaking the most widely used language and gathering the country’s many ethnic groups, I feel I have the expertise and authority to tackle the problem with my independence as my only attire.
This will cost me the dislike of many colleagues who are often completely ignorant of the real situation here in the Donbass, where I will never meet them.
So I’m going to run my workshops while waiting for curious, demanding and independent media to contact me, enabling me to finance these workshops in the meantime; this one in Mariupol, like the next ones I’m going to run throughout Ukraine when peace returns.

Un instant, j’aimerais revenir sur les raisons de ma présence à Mariupol pour la troisième fois en moins d’un an.
J’ai crée ce site www.arguments.photo à l’occasion du premier de mes ateliers de photo en Ukraine « Pics for Peace », initiés avec la début de cette guerre qui commença, il n’est pas inutile de le rappeler, en 2014.
S’il est bien un pays dont le destin chaotique depuis des décennies ne me laisse pas indifférent, c’est bien l’Ukraine.
La dimension prise par ce conflit attisé de tous côtés m’a poussé à réagir.
Par ce que je pense être un des rares photographes à se rendre dans ce pays depuis 1994 (une petite vingtaine de fois) en en parlant la langue la plus usitée et rassembleuse des multiples ethnies du pays, je me sens l’expertise et l’autorité d’aborder le problème à ma façon, avec pour seul habit, mon indépendance.
Cela me coûtera la désamour de beaucoup de collègues souvent complètement ignorants quant à la situation réelle ici dans le Donbass où je ne les croiserai jamais.
Je mènerai donc mes ateliers en attendant que des média curieux, exigeants et indépendants s’adressent à moi, me permettant au passage de financer ces ateliers; celui-ci à Mariupol, comme les prochains que j’irai initier dans toute l’Ukraine quand le paix sera revenue.
