For a whole range of reasons, I often keep the behind-the-scenes of my “Pics for Peace” project in Mariupol discreet.
Seen from afar, everything seems simple to everyone, as long as security is guaranteed.
And it’s true that life here is calm.
The children have already been on holiday for over a month. They take it in turns to be sent to a two-week holiday camp, usually in St Petersburg.
Otherwise the beaches are busy.
The weather is fine.
The destruction of the city’s three steel complexes has made the air more breathable.
That’s what I’m told by the residents I see every day.
As I near the end of the workshops that I plan to run until the end of July, I’m faced with a twofold problem:
Unlike this winter, Marioupol State University is no longer supporting me, either in terms of recruiting students or providing accommodation or a place to teach.
Finally, the departure for holiday camps forced me to launch yet another recruitment campaign with the help of André Kior, a freelance journalist who has just set up a KinoTelAcademy to which I am making a modest contribution.
Before Olga Agarkova and Mikhail Kozinets (both 19) went off to supervise themselves children on a summer camp, we went with the equally motivated participant Alexandre Zhezhomo to the Left Bank part of the port city.
There, they photographed the tram depot destroyed during the fighting in the spring of 2022, as well as a kindergarten that suffered the same fate.

Pour tout un ensemble de raisons, je garde souvent les coulisses de mon projet « Pics for Peace » in Mariupol discrètes.
Vu de loin, tout paraît simple à tous, tant que la sécurité est garantie.
Et il est vrai que la vie ici est calme.
Depuis déjà plus d’un mois les enfants sont en vacances. À tour de rôle, ils sont envoyés deux semaines en colonie de vacances, le plus souvent à Saint-Petersbourg.
Sinon les plages sont bien fréquentées.
Le temps est au beau fixe.
La destruction des trois complexes sidérurgiques de la ville a rendu l’air plus respirable.
C’est ce que me disent les habitants que je côtoie quotidiennement.
Pour la fin des ateliers que je compte mener jusqu’à la fin du mois de juillet, je suis confronté à un double problème :
- Contrairement à cet hiver, l’Université d’État de Marioupol ne me soutient plus, ni pour le recrutement parmi ses étudiants, ni pour un hébergement, ni pour un lieu où enseigner.
- Enfin le départ pour les colonies de vacances me contraint à lancer une énième campagne de recrutement avec l’aide d’André Kior, journaliste freelance qui vient de créer une KinoTelAcadémie à laquelle je contribue modestement.
Avant qu’Olga Agarkova et Mikhail Kozinets (tous les deux 19 ans) ne s’absentent encadrer eux-mêmes un camp de vacances, nous sommes allés en compagnie du non moins motivé participant Alexandre Zhezhomo dans la partie de la ville portuaire dite de la rive gauche.
Là, ils sont photographié le dépôt de tramway détruit lors des combats du printemps 2022 ainsi que dans un jardin d’enfants qui connut le même sort.

По целому ряду причин я часто скрываю закулисье моего проекта “Фотографии для мира” в Мариуполе.
Если смотреть издалека, все кажется простым, пока гарантирована безопасность.
И действительно, жизнь здесь спокойная.
Дети отдыхают уже больше месяца. Их по очереди отправляют в двухнедельный лагерь отдыха, обычно в Санкт-Петербург.
В остальное время пляжи заняты.
Погода прекрасная.
Разрушение трех металлургических комплексов города сделало воздух более пригодным для дыхания.
Так мне говорят жители, которых я вижу каждый день.
Когда я приближаюсь к концу семинаров, которые планирую проводить до конца июля, я сталкиваюсь с двойной проблемой:
В отличие от этой зимы, Мариупольский государственный университет больше не поддерживает меня ни в плане набора студентов, ни в плане предоставления жилья или места для преподавания.
Наконец, отъезд на каникулы заставил меня начать еще одну кампанию по набору студентов с помощью Андре Киора, журналиста-фрилансера, который только что создал КиноТелАкадемию, в которую я вношу скромный вклад.
Прежде чем Ольга Агаркова и Михаил Козинец (обоим по 19 лет) отправились сами присматривать за лагерем отдыха, мы с не менее целеустремленным участником Александром Жежомо отправились в левобережную часть портового города.
Там они сфотографировали трамвайное депо, разрушенное во время боев весной 2022 года, а также детский сад, который постигла та же участь.
